Gritty Brady Bunch re-imagining lands at Universal, Game of Thrones Director to helm
In what could be the first optioning of a concept from the An Archive of Our Own fanfiction database, Universal Studios in partnership with Sherwood Schwartz Productions announced a plan for a reboot of 70s sitcom classic The Brady Bunch, but with the kind of grit today’s audiences have become accusomed to.
“These arn’t your parents’ Bradys,” said executive Producer Steve Blum, a lesser member of the family of horror maestros. “Here’s the story of a lovely lady who was bringing up three very lovely girls, and the continent-spanning dynastic struggle that ocurred when the Man named Brady — who was bringing up three boys of his own — makes a play for her crown.”
The original AO3 script — a graphically sexual tale where the sisters and the brothers elope to Crete and murder one another until the remaining two die in destitution — is “more of just an inspiration,” said Selwyn Schwartz, nephew of Brady creator Sherwood Schwartz and current president of Sherwood Schwartz Productions.
Game of Thrones director Anton Sebery, best known for helming the Dorne arc of the the show, will shoot the pilot whenever the coronavirus production stoppage is listed or, alternatively, in one of those Balkan countries that straight-up did nothing.
Timothee Chalamet is in talks to play Prince Greg, but will definitely turn it down. Every one of the Stranger Things kids is expected to audition, but the role of Bobby will probably go to the one who was in It, what’s his name. Every woman on the show will be English.
The show, which has a rumored production budget of $150 million for the 8-episode season, will likely be slotted directly for release on Peacock.
